ACSR: ALUMINUM CONDUCTOR STEEL REINFORCED

What is an ACSR?
Aluminum conductor steel reinforced (or ACSR) cable is a specific type of high-capacity, high-strength stranded cable typically used in overhead power lines. The outer strands are aluminum, chosen for its excellent conductivity, low weight and low cost. The center strand is of steel for the strength required to support the weight without stretching the aluminum due to its ductility. This gives the cable an overall high tensile strength..continue..

Overhead transmission line conductors are usually ACSR or AAC to B.S. 215, although the aluminium alloy conductors to B.S. 3242 are also being used. Aluminium wires used in the AAC and ACSR are hard drawn and of 99.5% purity aluminium with a specific resistance of 2.8264 microhm cm. This gives a conductivity of 61 % I.A.C.S. ..continue..

ACSR is a concentric-lay-stranded conductor consisting of a single core wire or a stranded steel central core with one or more layers of 1350 H19 stranded aluminum wires. Steel core wires are protected from corrosion by galvanizing, aluminum-clad alloy or zinc – 5% aluminum mischmetal alloy coating. Standard, High, Extra and Ultra High strength steel are also available. All ACSR cables are also available in a non-specular finish. ..continue..

The rated continuous current carrying capacity of the conductor at a referenced ambient temperature, allowable temperature rise, geometry and installation.  For bare overhead conductors an ambient air temperature of 40°C is typical.  For underground insulated power cables an ambient earth temperature of 20°C is typical.  Temperature correction factors are then given to adjust the base ampacity for other ambient temperature levels. If a cable is loaded continuously above rated ampacity the insulation temperature design limits will be exceeded.  This will lead to loss of insulation life, not instantaneous failure. If a bare overhead conductor is loaded continuously above rated ampacity the mechanical strength of the conductor is reduced.  This will lead to a loss of mechanical life, not instantaneous failure. ..continue..

ACSR conductors are also known for its aluminum to steel ratio (i.e. 18/1, 26/7, 45/7). This also describes the stranding of every ACSR cable. ACSRs are also known to have code words which individual has different intrisic characteristics and they are usually taken from the names of birds others are from animals.

The table below shows a simple listing of different types of ACSR conductors with its respective resistance and reactance. This parameters affect the value of impedance of the wires thus also affects the power flow when it is put into service. Knowing these is very important in System's Loss Analysis especially in analyzing voltage drop in transmission lines...continue..

FRUITS AS BATTERY AND SOURCE OF ELECTRICITY

Electric Fruits Project   The purpose of this project was to find out which fruit would generate enough electricity to light a light bulb and to discover which fruit would light the bulb the longest. To conduct my experiments I used a Multimeter, copper and zinc wires & electrodes, alligator clips with leads, various light bulbs and five types of fruits. continue.. Why Do Citrus Fruits Produce Electricity?   In order to generate electricity, there must be a power source and a complete circuit. When using a citrus fruit to create electricity, these rules still apply. In a simple experiment using a citrus fruit, the components of the circuit include: a lemon or other fruit, wire, two different metal elements and a small light bulb. The lemon in this circuit serves as the battery and power source. continue.. POWER SYSTEMS LOSS.COM: LOSSES IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

What is powersystemsloss all about?    System's loss reduction is now one of the most growing trends in every electric distribution utility. Primarily triggered by economics and regulation concerns, Transmission and Distribution companies now sets more focus in reducing losses and become as an efficient utility as possible in delivering power. Information found in this site will be very useful not only to electrical practitioners but it is also our goal to help students better understand the actual world. Thank you and lets all enjoy learning! continue..   Back to basic    n case you don't know, the power we get from our household electrical outlet didn't just appear in the thin air. It may appear that it is coming out from our walls but we all know that looks can be deceiving. Before reaching our respective homes, electric current passes through miles and miles of c...

INDUCTION COOKER:PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

What is Induction Cooking?   Induction cooking uses induction heating to directly heat a cooking vessel, as opposed to using heat transfer from electrical coils or burning gas as with a traditional cooking stove. To be used on an induction cooktop, a cooking vessel must be made of a ferromagnetic metal, or placed on an interface disk which enables non-induction cookware to be used on induction surface. In an induction cooker, a coil of copper wire is placed underneath the cooking pot. An alternating electric current flows through the coil, which produces an oscillating magnetic field. This field induces an electric current in the pot. Current flowing in the metal pot produces resistive heating which heats the food. While the current is large, it is produced by a low voltage. continue.. Advantage and Disadvantages of Induction Cooker   To serious cooks, the most important favorable point about induction cookers--given that they are as or more "powerful" at heating...
